Intermetallic compounds of titanium and aluminum and their alloys exhibit high specific strength at elevated temperatures. Combined with their low density, this makes intermetallic alloys attractive for use in the aerospace and automotive industries. Depending on the production method, the structure of the alloys can vary, affecting their mechanical, thermal, and corrosion properties. The properties of the materials are influenced not only by grain size but also by the characteristics of the grain boundaries. Grain refinement increases the strength of Ti-Al alloys at high temperatures. This factor also accelerates the diffusion of various impurities or matrix atoms along grain boundaries, which, in turn, leads to the oxidation characteristics of these alloys. This article presents some existing data on oxidation kinetics and provides a brief overview of modeling methods in this area.
