The effect of impurities and their concentrations on the dielectric breakdown of MgO crystals at 1473 K is studied using an electric field of 1500 V/cm. Crystals doped with H, Cu, Co, Fe, Ni, Cr, or V are used. The current behavior and the characteristic time for breakdown of each crystal are investigated. The presence of Cu, Co, or H suppresses the breakdown, but the presence of Fe, Ni, Cr, or V enhances it. The suppression or enhancement of the breakdown depends on the dopant concentration.
