In the framework of a non-relativistic single-electron model, photoionisation cross sections from nl states (n<or=20, 0<or=l<or=4) have been computed for the Rb, Cu and Ag sequences. The evolution of non-hydrogenic behaviour of photoionisation near threshold is studied along the sequences, and emphasis is put on the occurrence of minima in the photoionisation cross section curves. Systematic trends along a sequence and the comparison of the behaviour along the different K, Rb, Cu and Ag sequences are analysed in terms of the quantum-defect theory. Through the principle of detailed balance, scaled radiative recombination coefficients alpha ' nl (T)' for Sr + -Y 2+ , Cu-Ga 2+ and Ag-Sn 3+ have been obtained within the scaled electron temperature range 500
