Establishing contact: Recent progress in the investigation of single-molecule contacts established in an electrochemical scanning tunneling experiment are described (see picture). The setup allows for the successive formation of many hundreds of junctions and a statistical analysis of the voltage dependence of the electrical current. This method is a new reliable tool to characterize molecular junctions and contributes to elucidating the potential of molecular electronics.
