The pressure-induced shifts by dimethyl ether of the infrared lines of the 2–0 band of hydrogen chloride have been measured. The shifts in the R branch are similar to those produced by the noble gases, but the shifts for all the J values in the P branch are negative. Large shifts (4×10—2 cm—1 per atm) are observed for P1 and P2 and then the shifts decrease rapidly reaching a minimum at P4. For larger J values the shifts become large again. A qualitative explanation of this type of shift is given.
