The light harvesting biliprotein phycoerythrocyanin isolated from the cyanobacterium Mastigocladus laminosus Cohn was separated into its subunits by isoelectric focusing in a granulated gel in the presence of urea with subsequent renaturation. Smaller amounts of the subunits were obtained from Tolypothrix distorta Kützing var. symplocoides Hansgirg, strain IUCC 424 (now UTEX 424), by chromatography of phycoerythrocyanin on hydroxylapatite. In both cases the isolated α‐subunits showed the photoreversible photochemistry characterizing phycochrome b, a photoreversibly photochromic pigment so far found only in extracts of phycoerythrocyanin‐containing organisms. Light‐induced absorbance changes in the β‐subunit and in phycoerythrocyanin were also studied.
