This editorial introduces a special Centennial Supplement issue celebrating 100 years of the journal Anesthesia & Analgesia.
This month marks the 100th anniversary of Anesthesia & Analgesia, and accordingly, we include a special Centennial Supplement issue with an accompanying infographic. How does one sum up 100 years of scientific knowledge and the collective wisdom of scores of legendary names in the field of anesthesiology? It is an impossible task to say the least. Through the assistance of the Guest Editors of this supplement, we sought to craft an infographic that would appeal to the interests of all the readers of this journal. A historical timeline was created, and across this scale we look at the tenure of the seven Editors-in-Chief and their periods of leadership. Notable milestones as they pertain to the journal as well as the International Anesthesia Research Society are included. What is likely to be of most interest to readers—young and old alike—is a range of citations from the earliest days of the journal which have reverberating effects on how we practice clinical anesthesia to this very day. Admittedly, there is only so much real estate on one physical page, and many qualifying references do not appear in this curated list of historical papers. This should not diminish the aggregate influence that Anesthesia & Analgesia has and continues to invoke on our craft. Readers are encouraged to explore these historic papers to enjoy the seedlings of science that define our practice.
