An accelerated test for zinc plates in nickel/zinc cells has been developed. Using the test, a large number of additives have been screened to see if they improve zinc utilization over 100 deep discharge cycles of the zinc plate. Three additives have yielded statistically significant results. These are , , and acetylene black. The mechanism of capacity loss of zinc plates was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the major mechanism of capacity loss was a decrease in the porosity of active material.
