Regulating RNA with light. An RNA aptamer capable of specifically binding one isomer of a photoisomerizable spiropyran small molecule was engineered. The reversibility of the light-switchable aptamer recognition was then characterized by SPR imaging. This RNA–small molecule pair has significant implications in the light-regulation of biological functions and the reversible control of gene expression.
