Two examples have been prepared and studied of a class of thiol esters which have been reported to show a new type of smectic phase (smectic X). The structures have been characterized by x-ray diffraction and each compound is found to have a hexagonal B type of phase in which the layers show a strong ripple modulation and a monoclinic G type of phase (smectic X) in which the molecules retain a pseudohexagonal packing and the tilt angle is about 10°. Both types of phase are believed to be essentially crystalline, but the details of the stacking in the G phases have yet to be established.
