This paper offers a critical analysis of Gopala Krishna's method for determining the dielectric relaxation time from the measurements of ε′ and ε″ at a single frequency in the dielectric dispersion range. The method is useful for medium and high loss substances but not for substances having low losses, the reason being the neglect of a term arising from electronic and atomic polarization of the solute. Higasi's approach yields more reliable values. A comparative study of the two methods has, therefore, been made from the measurements of eight polar organic liquids in dilute solutions of benzene.
