Spin-orbit potentials in dilute magnetic alloys are shown to give rise to anisotropy in the impurity spins. The anisotropy energy has the symmetry of the total spin-orbit 'lattice'. Its magnitude falls rapidly as the resistance R between the spin and the spin-orbit centre is increased, the asymptotic form being proportional to cos(4k F R)/R 7 . The anisotropy term provides a natural explanation for Gainon and Heeger's observation (1969) that addition of Pt suppresses the Kondo effect in CuMn.
