In 1908, two years after his discovery of histoplasmosis, Samuel T. Darling, MD, reported sarcosporidiosis in a 20-year-old man in Panama. The description of the parasite and subsequent illustrations of the skeletal-muscle biopsy material provide strong evidence to suggest that the parasite he found wasToxoplasma gondiiinstead. If so, Darling should be credited with the first recorded description of toxoplasmosis in man.
