Recent observations of nematic liquid crystals confined within cylindrical cavities with strong anchoring on the lateral boundary indicated periodic arrays of defects with degree alternating in sign even in samples too small to be observed by optical means. All attempts to explain these structures have so far relied on statics. Here we take a different approach and illustrate a dynamical model that describes the evolution in time of a cluster of defects towards the equilibrium configurations that we call neutral, as the defects experience no force.
