The high-resolution absorption spectrum of crystalline anthracene is presented. It contains a series of 10 weak bands on the shoulder of the first electronic transition polarized in the b direction. The series can be reproduced via a Rydberg formula which is characteristic of Wannier exciton levels. The effect of impurities and the relation of this Wannier exciton series to the photoconductivity are discussed briefly.
