The authors demonstrate for a variety of one-electron collision systems that a microscopic optical model formulation yields reasonable results for the dominant excitation channels as well as for the total electron loss from the target. The model is based on the local approximation, which assumes that consecutive interactions in the sense of perturbation theory occur in effect simultaneously. Three variants of a non-perturbative optical potential are investigated for scattering of fully stripped ions (H + , He 2+ , Li 3+ ) from hydrogen, the scattering of protons and one-electron ions (He + , Li 2+ ) and collisions of antiprotons with hydrogen.
