T amounts of disaccharides after a test meal occurs in diseases which alter small bowel morphology.16~30 Chemotherapeutic agents affect the integrity of the small bowel mucosaZ4 and for this reason studies were planned to assess the affect of chemotherapeutic agents upon the function of the small bowel. During these studies we noted a surprising degree of disacchariduria before chemotherapy in patients with carcinoma. Several mechanisms which might be responsible for this have been investigated. Although the nature of the mechanism behind the disacchariduria in patients with carcinoma remains unknown, the phenomenon itself seems to be worthy of report.
