A model of damped oscillations of a variable mass on a spring pendulum, with the mass decreasing at a constant rate is presented. The model includes damping terms that are linear and quadratic in the velocity. The effect of the mass loss rate on the magnitude of the damping parameters is discussed. The model is compared to experimental data obtained with the aid of computer-based laboratory equipment.
