An infant, perinatally infected with herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2, who exhibited cutaneous and central nervous system (CNS) involvement, has been described. His growth and development have been normal despite the fact that he did not receive chemotherapy. The course of his illness suggests the unpredictability of the outcome in neonatal infection of the CNS with HSV.
