The 'critical' opalescence of quartz during the alpha - beta inversion is ascribed to Rayleigh-Gans scattering in a two-phase medium. From the work of Kirste and Porod it is inferred that the intensity of the light emerging at 90 degrees is proportional to the area of the interphase boundary. An argument is made for the plausibility of such a connection.
