A Buckingham-type of polarization potential with an energy-dependent cut-off parameter is used to calculate differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of electrons by helium and hydrogen atoms. The parameter has been obtained in terms of target properties. The results for E=200-500 eV for helium and those for E=100 and 200 eV for hydrogen are in good agreement with various experiments and with other sophisticated theoretical calculations.
