Spontaneous and induced mutants of Ustilago hordei were characterized for resistance to benomyl, chloroneb, thiabendazole, and baytan. Auxotrophic mutants were detected by replica plating and fungicide resistance by gradient plating and testing transfers of the mutants. Fungicide resistance may be genetically determined and stable or nongenetic and unstable. Resistance to chloroneb and thiabendazole is controlled by more than one locus and is dominant, semidominant, or recessive. Loss of resistance and inability of stable mutants in the absence of the fungicide to compete with the wild-type strain could have important implications for fungal disease control.
