The responses of stem cells of the intestinal mucosa to 200 kVp X rays and 14 MeV neutrons, as measured by an in situ cell survival assay system, have been compared. The slopes of the dose-survival curves were not markedly different, but the shoulder of the neutron curve was narrower. Consistent with this, neutron-irradiated cells repaired less sublethal injury. Nevertheless, the repair between 14 MeV neutron exposures was appreciable and greater than that found by other investigators using cyclotron neutrons of mean energy 8 MeV.
