The main advantage of fast neutrons is the reduced oxygen enhancement effect, which enables anoxic tumour cells to be killed more readily than with γ and X rays. The disadvantage of long-term skin damage described by Stone (1948) has been explained in terms of an increase of RBE with extended neutron fractionation. RBEs for a number of biological systems were between 2·5 and 3·0 for X-ray doses greater than 1,000 rads, but appreciably higher for systems requiring lower doses and for anoxic tissues.
