Sets of crystal field parameters are derived to describe the splittings of the 5F', the 3K'8, the 5G'6, and the 5G'4,5 levels of Ho3+ in YPO4 separately. The differences of the A 〈r2〉 parameter for different levels by a factor of about 20 are explained qualitatively by different shielding factors for electrons in different LS‐states.
