Asymmetric Hall signals have been observed during measurements of the Hall current in diamond by the split-electrode method. It is shown that the asymmetry is due to transverse magnetoresistance. The magnetoresistance can easily be subtracted from the Hall signal to yield the true Hall current. It is suggested that the split-electrode method can be used to sample galvanomagnetic properties of material in the neighbourhood of the surface of a solid.
