30 randomly selected patients with a classical picture of Morbus Ménière were studied and compared with a group of 50 patients with verified severe cerebral atrophy. All patients were individually examined with an extensive battery of psychological tests, a general medical and neurological examination, laboratory examinations, electroencephalography, pneumoencephalography and X-ray of the skull. The patients with Ménière's disease were also examined with the Halstead Neuro-psychological Test Battery, a great number of supplementary psychological tests, otorhino-laryngological, audiologic and ophthalmological examinations. It should be emphasized that the results from the other investigations were withheld until the psychological examinations were completed. The results are in accordance with our preliminary report (Berdal et al. 1967) and indicate that the tissue damage and functional disturbances associated with Ménière's disease are not limited to the labyrinth. The present study provides additional evidence of organic cerebral changes as well as intellectual and other functional impairment in patients with Ménière's disease.
