Dispersed phases of alumina, thoria, titania and zirconia have been incorporated in an austenitic stainless steel (22% Cr, 22% Ni). Fine stainless-steel powder was produeed by intensive ball-milling; some observations were made upon the effectiveness of surfactants in lowering the particle size at which welding and agglomeration balance comminution. The powder mixtures were consolidated by hot extrusion. The product was evaluated by tensile and creep tests. A dispersion of 10 vol.-% titania gave the best creep properties.
