Many of these patients have persistent Australia antigen (as do many members of tropical populations studied previously (2) ). This observation stimulated an investigation of immunologic mechanisms in Down's syndrome patients with and without Au(1). One patient who did not have Australia antigen on previous testing developed it while under our observation. This provided the first evidence that Au(1) could be acquired. The patient went on to develop asymptomatic anicteric hepatitis detected only by biochemical and liver...References1.
