The application of technology (low, middle, and high technology) to the problems of the elderly will have two major effects. First, it will reduce the costs of care by providing additional help to the elderly so they can remain independent, and second, it will enhance the quality of life. Technology is divided into health care technology and ecological technology, both of which are important in caring for the elderly. Examples of the application of high, low, and mid-level technology are given. A discussion of the agencies involved in technology assessment is appended.
