The retarded interaction potential between atoms in electronically excited states is calculated in the dipole approximation with the aid of time-ordered graphs. The energy is shown to comprise three terms, two arise from the exchange of transverse photons with energies equal to the atomic transition energies and the third from a van der Waals' type of interaction between the excited atoms.
