The main requirements to cathode materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells are considered with regard to the mechanism of oxygen reduction on the cathode. Factors that affect the oxide-ion and electronic conductivity and also the thermal expansion coefficient of compounds with the perovskite structure are discussed. The crystal structure, high-temperature properties and electrochemical characteristics of the most promising cathode materials based on oxygen-deficient complex oxides of cobalt and layered perovskite-like oxides of nickel and copper are analyzed.
