Three and one-half million couples in America currently experience a fertility problem. These couples often undergo a prolonged state of emotional crisis during their infertility investigation and treatment. Family life practitioners can play a major role in helping infertile couples deal with this crisis. This paper reviews: (a) the causes of infertility; (b) the treatment options available to infertile couples; and (c) the coping patterns infertile couples display while dealing with their emotional turmoil. This paper also suggests areas in which family-oriented counselors and family life educators can ease the crisis of infertility and facilitate successful resolution of the emotional problems involved.
