In a recent study of infrared scattering by sunlit terrestrial clouds [Blau et al., 1965] we have observed scattering minima corresponding to characteristic absorption bands in bulk water and ice, the scattering efficiency being least at wavelengths where absorption is large. The effects are illustrated by the cloud radiance profiles in Figures 1 and 2. In both cases, cloud spectral radiance was computed by treating the cloud as a source, so that effects of atmospheric absorption over the sun-cloud-aircraft path are included. The records were taken with a spectrometer in a U-2 aircraft.
