Novel colloidal chemical methods are employed to synthesize hcp-cobalt nanoparticles, including 12-nm particles that have coercivity at room temperature. The torque from an external field was used to partially align the particles crystallographically during self-assembly. The degree of alignment found from the remanence ratio is interpreted in terms of the Ne/spl acute/el relaxation time.
