Muscle biopsy is used to divide these diseases into polymyositis, dermatomyositis, inclusion body myositis, nonspecific myositis, and immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy. Some patients with immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy have an associated medical condition, such as cancer; a connective tissue disease, such as scleroderma; or a viral infection, such as hepatitis C or HIV. Some patients who have none of these conditions have identifiable autoantibodies that allow them to be classified further. In 1 such group, the antibody is directed against the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. This ...References1. Mohassel P, Mammen AL.
