This study presents a comparison between time-domain and frequency-domain finite element models of an induction/hysteresis motor. The time-domain model includes a detailed description of the material magnetisation characteristics in the form of major and minor hysteresis loops. The model takes vector magnetisation and rotor movement into account. In the frequency-domain model, the magnetisation characteristics are represented by a complex effective reluctivity. The characteristics of a hysteresis motor driven by a voltage source inverter are determined using both computational approaches and are compared with measurements taken from a laboratory test-rig. Both models give comparable results of the machine steady-state performance. However, the time-domain model is computationally expensive compared to the frequency-domain model. The results provide a useful insight into the application of both computational approaches in the design of hysteresis motors.
