Describes a new photographic absorption technique which is particularly suitable for the analysis of shock and ionisation waves in laser-induced gas-breakdown. Results on the spark structure are compared to detailed spectroscopic measurements. The evolution of wavefronts is in good agreement with predictions of one dimensional Lagrangian code including ionisation dynamics. Shock wave separation, laser beam re-entry and subsequent post-heating and breakdown effects are clearly displayed with nanosecond resolution.
