As part of a study to evaluate bacterial removal of chromium from liquid streams a total of 362 bacterial isolates were made from chromium VI enrichment of sanitary sewage, chemical waste sludges and a lysimeter. The isolates were assessed for their level of tolerance to and uptake of the metal. Two isolates were chosen for more detailed uptake studies. Isolate #96 showed the highest (400 mg/L) tolerance to chromium VI but could not effectively accumulate chromium at low levels of the metal, whereas the o'ther isolate (#227) was able to accumulate the metal more effectively at low (5 mg/L) levels.
