A solution of the equations of generalized plane stress is obtained for the problem of a plate under tension, and with a hole bounded by a curve C1, when a rim of material of different thickness is between C1 and an inner curve C2. The equations are soluble exactly for a circular hole, and the method is applied to find a first approximation to the complex potentials when C1 is an ellipse or a curvilinear rectangle.
