The number fractions of the alternate diads and triads and the average length of the alternate sequence may be used as the indices of the alternation tendency of binary copolymerizations. It is shown that these indices take on maximum values when the monomer feed ratio is such that [M1]/[M2] = (r2/r1)1/2. The physical significance of the customary measure of the alternation tendency r1r2 is discussed.
