The antibiotics rifampicin and streptolydigin affect DNA-dependent RNA synthesis by interacting specifically with RNA polymerase; however, the mode of inhibition is quite different for the two drugs. Rifampicin inhibits initiation of transcription (Lill, Lill, Sippel, and Hartmann, 1969). Streptolydigin, on the other hand, has been thought to inhibit only elongation (Siddhikol, Erbstoeszer, and Weisblum, 1969; Schleif, 1969) and not initiation of RNA chains.
