Methods for the isolation and culture of Aphanomyces astaci, the causative organism of crayfish plague, are presented. The sensitivity of the pathogen to various antimicrobial agents was investigated, and a combination of penicillin G and oxolinic acid was chosen to provide a selective medium for isolation. A full description of the pathogen as isolated from a recent British outbreak of crayfish plague is presented, giving new descriptive details lacking in the classical descriptions of the organism.
