Arthroscopy of the subtalar joint was described in 1985 by Parisien and Vangsness. 1 The majority of the arthroscopic procedures described are performed in the posterior compartment. Nieny performed the first subtalar arthrodesis in 1905. Arthroscopic subtalar arthrodesis was developed as a surgical procedure in 1992 and first reported by the author at the Arthroscopy Association of North America's Annual Meeting in 1994. The procedure was designed to improve traditional methods by using a micro-invasive technique. The arthroscopic technique was intended to yield less morbidity and preserve the blood supply, as well as preserve proprioception and neurosensory input. The procedure has now been performed for 10 years with what appears to be long-term success with an increased fusion rate and a decreased time until fusion. There have not been any significant complications.
