The effect of humidity on the mechanical properties of single alpha-keratin fibers such as hair and wool have been examined on many occasions. The general changes in the complete load-extension curve, that is, in the Hookean region, yield region, and post-yield region, have been examined by Speakman who has also commented on the variations of properties of these regions. With the introduction of more sensitive extensometer equipment, a re-examination has been carried out of the load-extension properties of single wool fibers. Particular attention has been paid to the fiber length at each humidity and the relationship between the chain of length and the variation of load-extension properties. As a result of this re-examination of mechanical properties, important structural features of wool fibers are suggested.
