The setting of wool held at 3% and 10% extension in saturated steam at temperatures above 100°C has been investigated, the times and temperatures of steaming and the pH of the wool being varied. Experiments were carried out both on single fibres and on aligned bundles of fibres. It was shown that, over the pH range 3·0–9·2, steaming for 15 min at 115°C is sufficient to produce a considerable degree of set, stable to release in water at 100°C for one hour.
