This paper first proposes a new vernier permanent-magnet (VPM) machine which employs two sets of permanent magnet (PM) both in the stator and the rotor. Halbach arrays are used in the stator in order to solve the problem of the flux leakage. The design process for the proposed machine is given by mutual modulation of the PMs in the stator and the rotor, and the proposed machine offers high torque capability compared with the existing machines with only PMs in the stator or in the rotor. Moreover, a flux barrier is adopted to reduce the number of PMs and minimize the torque ripple. The time-stepping finite-element method is adopted to evaluate the proposed machine, which verifies the theoretical analysis.
