Methyl fluorosulphonate N-methylates octaethylporphyrin and octaethylchlorin to give, depending upon the reaction conditions, N-methyloctaethylporphyrin, two NN′-dimethylporphins, NN′N″-trimethylocataethylporphin, and an N-methyloctaethylchlorin.
