The paper is based on a more extended stydy being conducted by the Centre for Agricultural Strategy into resource use in the British economy and in particular into whether resources are optimally distributed between sectors. The paper itself focuses on productivity in the agricultural sector and in particular on the technical efficiency, sometimes referred to as ‘physical productivity’ of resource use within farming. It broadly concludes that while agriculture in the UK is relatively efficient compared to other sectors of the British economy, it does not enjoy the technical superiority over its European neighbours that it is often believed. Tentatively the study concludes that the lower than anticipated technical efficiency of British agriculture derives in part from a comparatively high capital–output ratio.
