A method for the production of a constant, well-defined reaction dwell time in a single-pulse shock tube is discussed and an expression is derived giving the dwell time in terms of geometric and flow parameters. The effect of finite cooling rate on the reaction rate is considered and a correction factor to the observed rate constant is given. This cooling correction is shown to be directly proportional to T2, inversely proportional to the cooling rate dT/dt, and the reaction dwell time t1, and, to a first approximation, independent of the heat-capacity ratio, γ = Cp/Cv.
